The management of Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, has prohibited all forms of sign-out and marker celebrations by graduating students, citing concerns over security, discipline and the institution’s reputation.
The directive was contained in a circular signed by the university’s Registrar, Aminu Alkali, following what the institution described as an increasing trend of inappropriate conduct during sign-out activities.
According to the university, practices such as writing on clothing, defacing personal appearances with markers and engaging in other forms of celebratory behaviour are inconsistent with the institution’s moral, cultural and security standards.
While acknowledging the excitement that comes with completing an academic programme, the management stressed that graduation celebrations must reflect the values and dignity of the university community.
The circular stated that such celebrations contradict the moral and cultural principles upheld by both the university and society, pose security risks by encouraging disorderly conduct and crowd disturbances, and negatively affect the institution’s image and integrity.
Consequently, the university announced an immediate ban on all sign-out and marker celebrations within the campus.
Students were encouraged to celebrate their academic achievements in a responsible manner that demonstrates discipline, respect for themselves and others, and adherence to the core values of the institution.
The management also directed security personnel and relevant university authorities to enforce the directive strictly.
It warned that any student found violating the ban would face disciplinary measures in accordance with the university’s rules and regulations.
