Dangote Unveils N1trn Scholarship to Keep 1.3m Nigerian Students in School

Industrialist Aliko Dangote has announced a ₦600m intervention for the construction of a girls’ hostel at Lagos State University, alongside employment opportunities for some of the university’s best-performing graduates.

The commitments were announced during LASU’s combined 29th and 30th Convocation Ceremonies for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

Represented by his daughter, Hajia Fatima Aliko Dangote, the business mogul was also honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Business Honoris Causa in Entrepreneurship, Industrial and Human Capital Development.

According to the university management, the Aliko Dangote Foundation’s ₦600m pledge will support the construction of accommodation for female students, an intervention that could help address student housing needs as the university continues to expand.

Beyond infrastructure, Dangote also opened a potential employment pathway for some of the university’s top graduates.

LASU said first-class graduates in Engineering and Sciences from the graduating classes would receive preferential consideration for employment with the Dangote Group after completing their National Youth Service Corps programme.

This means that academic excellence could translate into a direct opportunity to enter one of Nigeria’s largest business groups, particularly for graduates whose qualifications match the company’s needs.

The intervention comes at a significant moment for LASU, which recorded 20,604 graduates across the two academic sessions, including 494 first-class graduates.

For the 2024/2025 session, Ayilara Lawal Olawale emerged as the overall best graduating student with a 4.96 CGPA in Project Management Technology, while Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide emerged as the best graduating student for 2025/2026 with a 4.97 CGPA in Aerospace Engineering.

The two graduates had earlier received ₦20m each from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in recognition of their outstanding academic performances.

Dangote’s intervention also forms part of the broader conversation around how universities can connect academic achievement with employment, entrepreneurship and practical opportunities for graduates.

The Dangote Group currently employs more than 52,000 people across Nigeria and 11 other African countries, while the Dangote Academy provides practical training for graduates entering the industrial sector.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation also operates an education scholarship programme and has announced plans to invest $70m annually over the next 10 years in areas including secondary and tertiary education, teacher training, STEM and technical and vocational education.

At LASU, the latest intervention comes as the university continues to expand its infrastructure. The institution said more than 50 infrastructure projects had been executed through funding from the Lagos State Government, Federal Government, TETFund, private-sector contributions and internally generated revenue.

For female students, the proposed hostel could provide additional accommodation capacity. For first-class Engineering and Science graduates, the employment offer presents another incentive to take academic performance seriously.

Who Can Nigerian Students Turn to Over Wrong Results? Who Can Nigerian Students Turn to Over Wrong Results? Who Can Nigerian Students Turn to Over Wrong Results?

The development therefore goes beyond a financial donation. It links three important areas of university development—student welfare, academic excellence and access to employment opportunities.

As LASU moves forward with its expansion, the intervention from the Dangote Foundation could become another example of how private-sector support can complement government and institutional efforts to improve the university experience and create pathways from the classroom into the workplace.
