Upskill or Be Reskilled: What AI Is Really Telling the Mid-Career Professional

Upskill or Be Reskilled: What AI Is Really Telling the Mid-Career Professional
Edutimes Africa Job Portal Edutimes Africa Job Portal Edutimes Africa Job Portal

Every few months, a new headline announces that artificial intelligence is coming for our jobs. The headlines are loud, and mostly wrong. AI is not coming for your job. It is coming for the way your job is done, and that is a very different threat, with a very different response.

According to the Future of Jobs Report issued by the World Economic Forum, nearly 40% of the necessary skills for employment are going to change by 2030. Employers are forecasting that some jobs might disappear, but a staggering percentage of skills will lack viability in the near future. In particular, it is expected that 170 million new jobs will appear in the next decade while 92 million already-existing ones might vanish. While many people are worried about the future of their job, it means that the work itself does not disappear but migrates instead.

The other number nobody says out loud

Another statistic which is seldom mentioned alongside the WEF numbers is worth mentioning since it alters the perspective in an important way. The total amount of student debt in the United States surpassed $1.8 trillion; the average borrower has around $40,000 in student loans, and even years after leaving college. For young 24-year-olds, such debt poses a strain, although for 44-year-olds, who have a mortgage and a family to take care of, it presents a different risk altogether – one of giving up a job that pays well for two years of study with uncertain results.

GrannyMurray School GrannyMurray School GrannyMurray School

The reason behind many capable professions is why they procrastinate until they are forced to make a choice by AI or a layoff. Traditional higher education has been developed for eighteen-year-olds who have time and no money. It is not meant for someone who has both. The honest answer to the question of a working adult as to why he/she has not gone back to school is seldom that he/she does not see the point; in fact, it is more that he/she cannot afford to stop working.

The gap between wanting and doing

The interesting fact is that such professionals are aware of the problem. Surveys show that nearly 72% of employees express the wish of improving their skills in the future. At the same time, according to 85% of employers, training employees is perceived as the highest priority. Seventy-three percent of employers mention that their major concern related to the development of their business is the skills gap.

It is a fact that employees possess a desire to learn while companies are wishing that their employees would learn fast. Nevertheless, the calculations by the World Economic Forum show quite disappointing results; in the event that the global workforce consists of 100 employees 59 will need to undergo significant retraining by 2030, and 11 will not manage to master any new skills. More than 120 million workforce representatives fall in between plans and real opportunities. What makes the difference turns out to be not talent and money – it will be the manner of treating learning: as occasional necessity or regular habit.

Upskilling and reskilling are not the same word

The terms are often confused, and the distinction is extremely important for a person beyond the initial ten years of a their career. Upskilling refers to deepening of knowledge and skills in one’s existing career. Reskilling involves being left behind by the changes in the working world and having to start all over again, usually from the lowest level and lowest pay.

Both choices are respectable. However, one is a conscious decision and the other is typically a result of a situation. Someone who is upgrading their skills at a age of 35 is someone who is investing wisely. A person who has obtained new skills at the age of 45 is someone who is recovering. It is worth noting that recovering takes more time and money, both in terms of tuition fees and loss of potential income during the learning process. Today because of AI a mid-career professional is forced to decide what direction they want to take with their life sooner than before.

Why a weekend course will not save you

In response to all this, short courses are being collected, and the internet is more than up to the task of providing them. A certification program here, a boot camp there, or two hours of video on how to write prompts. They serve an important purpose, as they provide a good first impression, but their downside is that their ability to help you secure employment is quite limited.

We need to examine what specifically makes a person eligible for recognition in the fields of AI, cybersecurity, or data. The expectation is not only about having knowledge of tools which changes in 18 months; it is about thinking critically about the problems that the tools cannot solve independently, asking the right questions about data, evaluating risks, and communicating the reason behind the decisions to laypeople. Crucially, in its research, the Forum has established that the skills that will be in high demand in the year 2030 will be both technical and cognitive, that is analytical thinking, good judgment, and the ability to learn. These kinds of competencies cannot be acquired overnight; they can only be cultivated with an appropriate educational experience similar to educational backgrounds offered by respectable universities.

5 things you should know before you go abroad to study 5 things you should know before you go abroad to study 5 things you should know before you go abroad to study

A structured programme also solves a problem short courses cannot: coherence. Ten scattered certificates give you ten fragments. A degree in data science or business gives you an architecture, where statistics supports machine learning, which supports decision-making, which supports leadership. Employers can see the difference in an interview within minutes. And a credential from a recognised institution answers a question a stack of course completions never quite does: can this person finish something hard?

Learning without leaving

The previous concern was one of practicality, as older individuals in the labor force would not have the luxury to spend two years on campus. `This argument is no longer applicable in light of today’s flexible online educational programs that give professionals from places such as Mumbai and Lagos the opportunity to pursue an American-style curriculum in the evening and immediately implement it at work and keep their salaries. In fact, some of the best programs have been created in collaboration with technology companies, thus ensuring a seamless transition from theory to practice.

That last point is the quiet advantage working students have over everyone else. A 22-year-old studies theory and hopes it will be useful someday. A 38-year-old studies theory and tests it in a live business that same week. The classroom and the career stop competing and start compounding.

Likewise, the same rationale of cost follows suit. Earning a degree through evening study is not only more convenient than undergoing traditional two-year programs, but it also proves cheaper when one considers the income which most students would lose if they had to pursue their studies on a full-time basis. This is the guiding principle of Florida Coastal University: tuition fees should remain in proportion to what a working adult can afford while serving in their full-time profession, and the revenue earned from their profession continues rising while pursuing studies at university level.

The honest conclusion

AI is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to decide. The professionals who will do well in the next decade are not the ones who know every new tool, but the ones who made a structural commitment to their own growth while they still had leverage: a job, an income, a network, and time. Upskill now, on your own terms and your own income, or be reskilled later, on someone else’s terms and someone else’s price. Technology has made the choice clearer than it has ever been. It has not yet made it for you. That part, thankfully, is still human.
