A high-level delegation from Forum for African Women Educationalists Gambia Chapter (FAWEGAM) paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister for Basic and Secondary Education to strengthen collaboration and discuss key priorities in the education sector.
The delegation was led by Chairperson Mrs Tida Jatta Jarjou and included the FAWEGAM Coordinator, Mrs Yadicone Njie Eribo; FAWE Nairobi Board Member Mrs Oley Dibba Wadda; Senior Programme Officer Matin Mendy; and FAWEGAM Alumni President Mrs Aisha Jallow.
Among the key issues discussed were:
An invitation from FAWE Nairobi to the Honourable Minister to participate in FAWE’s General Assembly and the Africa Girls’ Education Conference scheduled for November.
FAWEGAM’s invitation to the Ministry to attend its own General Assembly in June 2026.
The impact of FAWEGAM’s Mothers’ Clubs on The Gambia’s education landscape, particularly in improving access, retention, school feeding, and overall school support systems.
The work of FAWEGAM Alumni in mentoring both boys and girls, and their contribution to improving girls’ retention in school.
The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education’s subvention to FAWEGAM.
In her response, the Honourable Minister thanked the delegation for the visit and commended FAWEGAM’s sustained contribution to enhancing girls’ access to and retention in education. She encouraged the organisation to design more programmes that also target boys in order to promote balance and inclusivity.
The Minister further stressed the importance of effective communication within families, noting that gaps in parent-child communication remain a challenge in many homes across The Gambia. She highlighted the need for strengthened guidance and mentoring, especially in career development, to help students make informed career choices before completing secondary school.
She also suggested capacity building for Mothers’ Clubs to better support children with homework and learning activities at home.
The Permanent Secretary equally expressed appreciation for the visit, applauded the cordial working relationship between the Ministry and FAWEGAM, and encouraged the organisation to continue its impactful work, assuring them of his continued support.
