The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s mandate of training 120,000 qualified healthcare workers within 16 months across Nigeria.
Speaking during the institution’s inaugural matriculation ceremony at its Trans-Ekulu campus in Enugu on Monday, the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Emaimo, emphasized the university’s readiness to meet the target set by the President when he established the university on March 14, 2024.
According to Prof. Emaimo, “President Tinubu made it clear at the foundation laying that the goal is to boost manpower in the healthcare sector by producing 120,000 frontline health workers by July 2025 and to double the number of primary health facilities from 8,800 to over 17,000 across the country.”
He noted that the university swiftly secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run 18 allied healthcare degree programmes and commenced intensive academic training immediately.
Highlighting the university’s infrastructural development, Prof. Emaimo revealed that a 1,000-capacity auditorium has been completed, along with a new Library and ICT block. He added that classroom blocks and the administrative building are also under construction or already completed.
“We are building a disciplined academic environment, with zero tolerance for indolence, cultism, or truancy. Our goal is to nurture graduates who will integrate seamlessly into the healthcare system and also contribute as employers of labour,” he said.
He further explained that students at the university will graduate with dual qualifications—a Bachelor’s degree in their respective allied health disciplines and a professional diploma in an entrepreneurial field—alongside strong moral values and a commitment to service.
The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, is set to play a key role in transforming Nigeria’s health workforce and expanding access to quality healthcare services.
