Employee training is a structured process that enhances employee skills and knowledge to improve performance and productivity. It involves providing instruction and activities to help employees learn new things or improve existing skills. Training can range from introducing new hires to their roles to teaching existing employees how to use new technology
Trainability is basically an individual’s capacity to be trained or their ability to learn and respond effectively to new learning curves. It’s not just about the initial aptitude but also how someone adapts and progresses with practice.
Indeed, trainability is a highly attractive trait for hiring organisations. Employers value employees who are eager and able to take initiative, learn and adapt to new situations, technologies, and roles. This willingness to develop and improve skills leads to increased productivity, job satisfaction, and opportunities for advancement, ultimately benefiting both the employee and the organization.
Now, you may ask, “Why is Trainability so Important?” Well, I’ll tell you:
. Increased Productivity and Performance: Trainability enhances employees’ skills and knowledge, leading to improved performance and efficiency.
Improved Job Satisfaction: Employees who are take charge of their learning and growth feel more valued and more engaged, boosting morale and will ultimately lead to job satisfaction.
Opportunities for Advancement: Trainability prepares employees for new responsibilities and internal promotions, creating a clear career path within the organization or in a new job.
Stronger Workforce: A workforce that embraces learning and development is more adaptable and resilient to change.
Reduced Costs: Well-trained employees are less likely to make errors, which can save the company money.
Alignment with Organizational Goals: Training ensures that employees are equipped with the skills necessary to achieve the company’s objectives.
Enhanced Innovation: A learning-oriented culture fosters creativity and innovation within the workplace.
Improved Company Processes: Training helps streamline processes and improve efficiency.
Better Retention and Attracting Talent: Companies that invest in training programs are more likely to retain their employees and attract new talent.
Competitive Advantage: A skilled and adaptable workforce gives companies a competitive edge in the marketplace and the job market.
Common examples of Trainability in Action:
An employee taking initiative to research a new topic/concept
An employee learning a new software program to improve their workflow.
An employee volunteering to lead a training session for their team on a new company policy.
An employee successfully transitioning into a new role after undergoing a training program.
Interestingly, the opposite of trainability is Untrain-ability and it refers to fundamental character qualities that are difficult or impossible to teach or change through formal training or coaching. These traits often stem from personality, values, or ingrained habits that are deeply rooted in an individual’s core being. Such as attention to detail, work ethic, initiative, resourcefulness, determination, willingness to learn etc.
Now since trainability is such an attractive trait, you may be wondering what employers actually look out for during interviews. Well, here are 10 everyday learning traits that your next employer will be looking out for:
Work Ethic,
Resourcefulness,
Determination,
Willingness to Learn,
Self-Motivation,
Responsibility.
Adaptability,
Integrity,
Emotional Intelligence,
Positive Attitude,
Strategic Employers understand the value of training as an investment and will do practically anything to maximise such investments hence the common quote “The only thing worse than training an employee and losing them, is NOT training them and keeping them”
