Sedia Kebbeh of Soma Upper and Senior Secondary School has emerged as the winner of The Gambia Teacher Prize 2026, earning national recognition for his dedication to education and student development.
Kebbeh, who hails from the well-known town of Soma in the Lower River Region, rose from humble beginnings. Raised by his mother alongside his siblings, he has built a reputation grounded in resilience, discipline, and a deep commitment to shaping young minds.
His teaching career has been defined by a passion for inspiring students to aim higher and embrace opportunities. Many of his students, influenced by his mentorship, have gone on to demonstrate confidence and a willingness to take risks in pursuit of success.
The 2026 victory marks a significant milestone not only for Kebbeh but also for the Regional Education Directorate 4 in the Lower River Region. The region has now secured the prestigious teacher prize for the third consecutive year, maintaining its dominance over seven other regions in the country.
The award, organised by the Namie Foundation, celebrates excellence in teaching and honours educators who have made outstanding contributions to learning outcomes and community development.
In his acceptance speech, Kebbeh expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to the teaching profession. The ceremony also featured remarks from the Honourable Minister of Education, who commended the winner’s dedication and encouraged teachers across the country to remain steadfast in their service.
Further updates, including excerpts from Kebbeh’s speech and highlights from the event, are expected to follow.
