What do we need right now in Africa? Do we need to sustain the education we have currently or improve and advance it?
Sustenance is to cause something to continue for an extended period, while improvement is to make it better. Education has gotten to the stage where it needs both sustenance and improvement. This can be done in a manner where we improve and sustain then improve and sustain again. The changes implemented are therefore sustained by improving the incorporated cultures. This is because we live in a contemporary world and the level of transformations, intelligence and innovations differs.
The key concerns to sustaining and improving education should be:
1. What should be sustained and improved in the educational system?
2. At what level should it be sustained?
3. Who are those to implement it?
These are critical questions that education Planners, Administrators and Government Agencies and all School leaders should give answers to, so as to solve massive problems in the educational section. Private schools are not excluded in providing answers to these critical questions which could be in the areas of curriculum, policy, system, structure and forms of education etc.
Sustainability Education is often referred to as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which has been defined as: “Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future (UNESCO, 2014).
In the world of education in Africa can the present teaching and learning assist the learners to have a sustainable future? If your answer is yes then where is the need for improvement but if you answer is No, there is a need for improvement.
As a stakeholder, find out areas you can contribute to the development of the educational sector that will bring about sustenance and improvement in the lives of the people.
