Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has once again placed African music on the global stage by winning the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards.
Her hit song “Love Me JeJe” earned her the prestigious award, surpassing strong contenders including “Tomorrow” by Yemi Alade, “MMS” by Asake featuring Wizkid, “Sensational” by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and “Higher” by Burna Boy.
This marks Tems’ second Grammy win, further cementing her place as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artistes. The category, introduced in 2024, was first won by South Africa’s Tyla for her viral hit “Water”, showcasing the growing recognition of African music in the global industry.
Tems received three nominations at this year’s Grammys, bringing her career total to eight. In addition to her win, she was also nominated in two other categories:
Best Global Music Album (Born in the Wild)
Best R&B Song (Burning)
This year’s Grammy nominations further highlight the global appeal of African artistes, with Rema also earning a nod for Best Global Music Album and Asake, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and Yemi Alade competing in the Best African Music Performance category.
