President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved new appointments into the governing councils and leadership of two recently upgraded federal universities of education, reinforcing his administration’s pledge to strengthen Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President named Engineer Abdurrazaq Abubakar Nakore as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.
Also appointed was Professor Abdullahi Tukur Kodage, who will serve as the Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
Engineer Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, previously served as Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Rural Electricity Board, bringing extensive technical and administrative experience to his new role.
Professor Kodage, described as a seasoned academic, is expected to drive both academic and administrative development at the university.
At the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure as Vice-Chancellor.
Bunkure, a distinguished scholar in science education, is currently Vice-Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano, and is widely respected in academic circles.
Both universities were among four Colleges of Education upgraded to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023, in line with federal policy to expand access to quality tertiary education.
According to the laws establishing the institutions, pro-chancellors serve a four-year tenure, while vice-chancellors hold office for five years.
The new appointments are expected to enhance leadership stability and accelerate academic growth as the institutions consolidate their transition into fully operational universities.
