Leadership changes in a university can affect everything from decision-making to the overall direction of the institution.
That is why the resignation of the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (AFUSTA), Kebbi State, is drawing attention.
Professor Ismaila A. Mungadi has stepped down from his position, saying recent developments made it difficult for him to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the office.
In a resignation letter dated August 28, 2026, and addressed to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, Mungadi said his resignation took effect on the same day.
According to him, he accepted the appointment with a clear mission to help stabilise the university, strengthen governance processes, restore confidence and academic integrity, and support its transition to substantive leadership.
“I accepted the appointment with a clear understanding of the mandate entrusted to me: to stabilize the University, strengthen its governance processes, restore confidence and academic integrity, and facilitate its transition to substantive leadership,” he stated.
The professor said he dedicated himself fully to the role and worked closely with members of the university community and other stakeholders to make progress during his time in office.
However, he explained that recent events had made it increasingly difficult for him to perform his duties with the level of independence and effectiveness he considered necessary.
“Developments in recent weeks have increasingly made it difficult for me to discharge the mandate with the independence, effectiveness and institutional harmony that I believe are necessary for its successful accomplishment,” Mungadi said.
He noted that he attempted to resolve the challenges through the appropriate channels but eventually concluded that he could no longer achieve the objectives for which he accepted the appointment.
“I have made sincere efforts to work through the appropriate structures and to seek resolution of the emerging challenges. Regrettably, I have come to the considered conclusion that, under the prevailing circumstances, I may no longer be able to satisfactorily accomplish the objectives for which I accepted the appointment,” he said.
According to Mungadi, remaining in office without being able to effectively carry out his mandate would not serve the university’s best interests.
“For me, remaining in office when I am unable to effectively discharge the mandate entrusted to me would not be in the best interest of the University. I therefore consider resignation the most appropriate course of action,” he stated.
Despite stepping down, the outgoing Acting Vice-Chancellor said he remains committed to the growth of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero, and the development of Kebbi State.
He also thanked the Visitor, the Kebbi State Government, members of the Governing Council, staff, students, and the wider university community for their support during his tenure.
Mungadi further assured the Governing Council that he would ensure a smooth handover process and remain available to support the transition.
