The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has become an important source of financial support for students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
But before applying, every student should understand how the scheme works, what the loan covers and, importantly, how repayment works.
Here are 15 important things every Nigerian student should know about NELFUND:
1. NELFUND provides interest-free student loans
NELFUND provides zero-interest loans to eligible Nigerian students to help them meet the cost of higher education. The programme is designed to reduce financial barriers to tertiary education.
2. It is a loan, not a scholarship
This is very important.
Money received through NELFUND is not a grant or scholarship. It is a loan that beneficiaries are expected to repay according to the terms of the student-loan agreement.
3. The loan can cover institutional charges
NELFUND can pay verified institutional charges directly to the student’s institution. Depending on eligibility and the approved application, students may also receive an upkeep component.
4. Upkeep payments go to the student’s account
Where an upkeep loan is approved, NELFUND pays the money into the bank account provided by the student on the portal. Institutional charges, however, are paid to the institution.
5. You must provide accurate information
Students are responsible for the information they submit during registration and application.
Incorrect or misleading information can create problems during verification, disbursement and eventual repayment. NELFUND’s terms require applicants to confirm that the information provided is accurate.
6. Your educational information must be verified
The application process involves verification of your Nigerian identity, educational information and student status. The NELFUND portal provides options for verifying student information, including through JAMB where applicable.
7. You don’t need to visit a physical office to apply
The application is made online through the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal.
Students should be careful about individuals or websites claiming they can process NELFUND applications for a fee.
8. Your institution matters
NELFUND works with participating tertiary institutions to verify students and process institutional payments. Students should therefore ensure that their institution and student records are correctly captured in the system.
9. You can monitor your application online
After creating an account and submitting an application, students can log into their NELFUND account to follow the status of their application and access relevant information.
10. Receiving the loan does not depend on graduating
A major point students should understand is that the loan remains the student’s responsibility even if the student eventually leaves school without graduating.
NELFUND’s terms state that the beneficiary remains personally liable for loans paid to the institution or for upkeep in the student’s name.
11. Repayment does not begin immediately after graduation
For beneficiaries who participate in NYSC, NELFUND’s current terms state that repayment begins two years after completion of NYSC.
12. Your employer can be involved in repayment
Once a beneficiary becomes employed, the student is required to update employment information on the NELFUND portal.
The current loan terms provide for 10 per cent of monthly salary to be deducted at source for repayment when repayment becomes due.
13. Self-employed graduates also have repayment obligations
Being self-employed does not cancel the loan.
According to NELFUND’s terms, a beneficiary who becomes self-employed is required to provide information about the business, including its name, address, registration details where applicable and banking information.
14. Failure to repay can trigger recovery measures
Students should not treat an interest-free loan as free money.
NELFUND’s terms include a Global Standing Instruction (GSI). Under the mandate, NELFUND can seek recovery from funds held in the beneficiary’s accounts across financial institutions if the loan becomes due and remains unpaid. The GSI is described as a last-resort recovery mechanism.
15. You should apply only through the official NELFUND platform
Students should avoid fake agents, fraudulent websites and social-media accounts requesting money or sensitive information to “guarantee” approval.

One final thing students should remember
NELFUND can make higher education more accessible, but every beneficiary should understand that the financial assistance comes with an obligation to repay.

Education may be an investment in your future, but NELFUND wants students to understand that the money supporting that investment is ultimately a loan that must be repaid.
