No fewer than 15,000 pupils in 45 public schools across seven communities in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have received free school bags from the Hamilton & Thelma Ezeonu Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.
The bags were distributed between November 5 and 7, 2025, across public schools in Ojoto, Oba, Nnokwa, Nnobi, Akwukwu, Awka-Etiti, and Alor communities.
The foundation’s co-founder, Mrs. Thelma Ezeonu, said the gesture was inspired by her husband’s visit to some public schools, where he noticed many pupils carrying their books in polythene bags.
“That sight touched him deeply,” she said. “He decided to launch the one-child-one-school-bag project to ensure every pupil has a proper bag. We’re starting with 15,000 pupils in Idemili South, but our goal is to reach all 21 LGAs in the state.”
Ezeonu encouraged the beneficiaries to value their education and study hard, noting that the foundation would return next year to assess their academic performance.
The Supervisor for Education in Idemili South, Mrs. Chika Uche, praised the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would relieve parents’ financial burden and boost pupils’ confidence in school.
Some of the beneficiaries, Miss Gold Chimezie of Migrant Farmers Primary School, Nnobi, and Master Uche Nnabife of Community Primary School, Akwukwu, expressed gratitude, promising to take their studies more seriously.
