5 Boundaries You Should Set With Your Roommate on Campus

Over the years, students have had issues with their roommates, and some of these problems could have been avoided if certain things had been discussed before agreeing to live together.

While it is good to live with love, peace, harmony, and understanding, it is equally important to set certain boundaries to protect your peace of mind and dignity.

In fact, some students have had their self-esteem affected, lost focus, or experienced serious emotional distress because of the kind of treatment they received from their roommates.

Here are five boundaries to establish before agreeing to share a room with someone on campus.

1. Privacy and Personal Belongings

As roommates, you must learn to respect each other’s privacy and personal belongings.

This includes not taking or using someone’s property without permission, not tampering with their belongings, and respecting each other’s confidential information.

While this may sound like a strict policy, especially when two people are expected to live together for an extended period, it is important to make these expectations clear from the beginning.

Many students have ignorantly overstepped these boundaries, leading to accusations of stealing, unnecessary arguments, and even stigmatisation.

The fact that someone is your roommate does not automatically give you access to everything that belongs to them.

2. Food and Grocery Consumption

Sharing food and groceries can be a beautiful part of living with someone. It can create opportunities for friendship, bonding, and mutual support.

However, certain things need to be clearly defined.

Are both roommates going to contribute to groceries and share what they buy? Or will each person be responsible for their own food and expenses?

These are important questions to ask before moving in together.

Imagine a situation where one roommate regularly consumes the other’s food while keeping their own supplies untouched. Over time, this can create resentment, arguments, and damaged relationships.

There is nothing wrong with sharing, but sharing should be based on mutual understanding rather than assumptions or entitlement.

3. Chores and Shared Responsibilities

As much as two people may boast of being understanding and mature, it is important to establish clear expectations about keeping the room clean and maintaining the shared environment.

Who sweeps the room? Who takes care of the waste? How will other cleaning responsibilities be shared?

These may appear to be minor issues, but they can become major sources of conflict when one person feels they are doing all the work while the other contributes little or nothing.

Having an understanding of each other’s responsibilities from the beginning can help prevent unnecessary disagreements.

Remember, living together means sharing the space, and everyone should be willing to contribute to keeping it comfortable.

4. Personal Values and Lifestyle

Before agreeing to live with someone, take time to understand their values, habits, and general approach to life.

Some students have been negatively influenced by the company they keep, while others have struggled to maintain their personal principles because of pressure from their roommates.

This does not mean your roommate must agree with you on everything. Nobody is perfect, and differences are inevitable.

However, it is important to identify differences that could affect your education, personal development, or general well-being.

Ask questions where necessary. If there are differences, consider whether they are things you can comfortably accommodate without compromising your values.

The goal is not to find someone who is exactly like you, but someone whose differences you can respect without constantly feeling pressured to abandon your principles.

5. Religious Beliefs and Tolerance

Religion is another important subject to discuss before agreeing to share a room with someone.

Roommates may have different religious beliefs, practices, and approaches to worship. These differences should be understood and respected.

For instance, one person may have particular times for prayer, while the other may have different religious routines or beliefs.

The important thing is to establish mutual respect and agree on how to accommodate each other’s practices without creating unnecessary tension.

However, tolerance must be genuine. It should not be an outward show of acceptance while secretly looking for opportunities to manipulate, ridicule, or blackmail the other person because of their beliefs.

Nobody should have to endure religious intimidation or feel unsafe because they practise a different faith.

Listen, Before You Agree to Live Together…

These are important conversations to have before deciding to share a room with someone for the next four, five, or even seven years of your academic journey.

Some students avoid these conversations because they feel awkward or fear that setting boundaries might make them appear difficult. Unfortunately, some later find themselves regretting decisions that could have been better considered from the beginning.

Of course, not every roommate relationship ends badly. Many students have built beautiful friendships with their roommates and maintained those bonds even after graduation.

The goal is not to approach every potential roommate with suspicion, but to understand that living together requires more than friendship; it requires mutual respect, clear expectations, and healthy boundaries.

Choose your roommate wisely, communicate openly, and remember that protecting your peace of mind is just as important as maintaining a good relationship with the person you live with.
