The Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology of The Gambia, Prof. Pierre Gomez, has led a high-level delegation to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to understudy Nigeria’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) model.
The delegation, which includes The Gambia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Mohamadou Njie, and other senior government officials, is exploring how NOUN’s ODL system can be adapted to strengthen university education in The Gambia.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Gomez praised Nigeria for its continued support to The Gambia and highlighted the severe disruption the COVID-19 pandemic caused to the country’s education sector.
He noted that NOUN’s successful use of technology to sustain uninterrupted teaching and learning during the pandemic demonstrated the resilience and effectiveness of Nigeria’s ODL model.
According to the minister, the visit is aimed at gaining firsthand knowledge of NOUN’s operations and identifying best practices that can be replicated to expand access to quality university education in The Gambia.
