The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for allegedly extorting unsuspecting candidates.
JAMB disclosed this in its release bulletin on Monday, saying the disciplinary action was part of its renewed efforts to sanitise the admission and examination processes.
The Board said the decision demonstrated that its efforts to tackle fraud were not limited to individuals operating outside the organisation, adding that internal misconduct would also attract sanctions.
According to JAMB, the affected staff member was dismissed after being found to have engaged in conduct capable of exploiting candidates and members of the public.
The Board warned its workforce against engaging in unethical practices, particularly actions capable of undermining the integrity of its operations or abusing the trust placed in its officials.
It said, “The Board once again warned all members of staff to desist from all forms of unwholesome conduct, particularly acts capable of undermining the integrity of the Board or exploiting candidates and members of the public, as such actions would attract severe consequences in accordance with established rules.”
JAMB said the action against the staff member was also intended to reinforce its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and misconduct, regardless of the position occupied by an individual within the organisation.
The examination body added that it would not shield staff members who abused their positions or took advantage of candidates and members of the public.
It stated that the same determination used in dealing with external fraudsters would be applied to employees found to have violated the Board’s rules.
“The Board noted that the action sends a clear and unequivocal message that its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applies to everyone, irrespective of status or position,” it said.
JAMB further warned that employees whose actions compromised its operations would face disciplinary measures in accordance with established procedures.
The Board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a professional, accountable and transparent workforce, stressing that efforts to protect the integrity of the admission and examination systems must also address misconduct from within the organisation.
