President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with the Chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Jim Ovia, to discuss the implementation and expansion of the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with discussions focusing on the programme’s progress and efforts to improve access to higher education for eligible Nigerian students.
The student loan scheme was introduced to reduce financial barriers that prevent students from pursuing or completing tertiary education.
According to a report by Naija Media Trends, the discussions also covered efforts to improve loan application procedures and disbursement processes to ensure eligible students receive financial assistance more efficiently.
Ovia, the founder of Zenith Bank, was appointed chairman of the NELFUND Board in April 2024 to provide leadership and oversight for the implementation of the student loan initiative.
The meeting underscores the Federal Government’s continued engagement with NELFUND leadership to strengthen the delivery of the scheme and widen access to higher education.
As implementation continues, the effectiveness of the programme will depend on efficient administration, timely disbursement and sustained efforts to ensure eligible students can access the support available to them.
