ASUU Warns of Fresh Strike Over Poor Deal Implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total and indefinite strike across the three universities owned by the Lagos State Government, disrupting academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The Lagos State Government-owned Universities Joint Campus Group of ASUU announced the industrial action on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.

The affected institutions are LASU, Ojo; LASUED, Oto/Ijanikin; and LASUSTECH, Ikorodu. The union said the strike took effect immediately after separate congresses were held by the ASUU branches in the three universities.

According to ASUU, the 14-day ultimatum was issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026, demanding the domestication and full implementation of the December 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government across the three state-owned universities. The deadline expired without what the union considered a satisfactory resolution or concrete commitment from the state government.

The union said it subsequently issued a final warning on September 10, stating that the September 13 deadline would be the final opportunity for the Lagos State Government to initiate dialogue and address the outstanding issues. ASUU said the deadline passed without the government initiating the expected engagement.

One of the major demands raised by the lecturers is the full implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and other welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff. The union also previously cited issues surrounding salary adjustments and outstanding financial obligations.

ASUU said it had pursued dialogue before resorting to industrial action and maintained that the strike was directed at the Lagos State Government rather than the managements of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH. The union said its national leadership had backed the steps taken by the Lagos branches, including letters to university administrations, governing councils and the Visitor before the ultimatum was issued.

The union said the strike would remain in force indefinitely until meaningful engagement produces a satisfactory resolution and the Lagos State Government signs, domesticates and implements the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement. ASUU also appealed to students, parents and other members of the university community to understand the reasons for the industrial action.

The development comes at a critical period for students across the three Lagos State-owned universities, particularly as institutions prepare for or continue activities connected with the 2026/2027 academic session. The duration of the disruption will depend on the outcome of negotiations between the union and the Lagos State Government.

Lagos is among the states identified by ASUU’s national leadership as having outstanding issues relating to the implementation of the 2025 agreement. The latest development means students of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH are now affected by an indefinite academic staff strike, pending the resolution of the dispute.
