The Federal Government has rolled out the Renewed Hope Campus Transport Scheme, deploying 240 solar-powered electric tricycles to 12 federal universities as part of efforts to ease transportation challenges faced by students and promote clean, sustainable mobility on Nigerian campuses.

The initiative was officially launched on Tuesday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (FAMedS, CON). According to the minister, the programme reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to design innovative and youth-focused solutions in the education sector.

“Mr President directed that we design solutions that are innovative, sustainable and responsive to the needs of our young people,” Dr. Alausa said during the inauguration.

Implemented through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), each participating university received 20 e-tricycles and a solar-powered charging station. The tricycles are to be operated by the institutions’ Student Union Governments at subsidised rates to ensure affordability while generating revenue for routine maintenance and future expansion.

The beneficiary universities represent all six geopolitical zones and include: UNILAG, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Benin, University of Jos, and Ahmadu Bello University, among others.

The government says the scheme will reduce student transport costs by more than 70%, improve mobility on campuses, and advance the national push toward zero-emission transportation.

Dr. Alausa also announced additional interventions for 2026, including the provision of more e-tricycles, free CNG conversions for 2,000 vehicles belonging to university staff, and the installation of an 11MW solar mini-grid at UNILAG.

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, praised the project, describing it as a major advancement for the university’s green mobility agenda.

With the scheme now fully operational, the Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to improving student welfare and driving sustainable innovation across Nigeria’s higher education system.
