Nigeria: FUTA SOUTH GATE TO WEAR NEW LOOK

…. Department of Architecture Supervises Project as Consultants

The South Gate Entrance of the Federal University of Technology Akure ,FUTA will soon wear a new befitting look complete with better aesthetics and walkway. On Friday February 27,2026 ,the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, officially handed over the site to the construction firm whose work will be moderated by experts from the University’s Department of Architecture who are the consultants on the project to ensure fidelity to design and compliance with stipulated standards, and safety regulations.

The lead architect on site, Professor Adedayo Ayoola, current Head of Department of Architecture, FUTA thanked the management for giving the department the opportunity to showcase its expertise. He said the design for the project was done via a competition among students of architecture supervised by their lecturers. He said the New South Gate has been designed in such a way that will depict the true image of FUTA in colour, building and roofing. Professor Ayoola stated that it would be an opportunity to engage the students practically as soon as the construction commences. He explained that involving students in aspects of the project would enable them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, thereby enhancing their professional skills and overall academic experience. According to him the new gate design derives its form and other features from the existing South Gate to allow for uniformity, locational attributes of the project site and behavioural attitude to the use of gate house among others.

Speaking during the hand over, professor Oladiji reaffirmed the management’s commitment to providing a safe and secure learning atmosphere for students, staff and visitors. The Vice Chancellor said the new south gate is expected to ease traffic flow, regulate entry and exit into the campus and also complement existing security structures to curb unauthorized access and reinforce the University’s safety architecture.

Professor Oladiji stated that it was a long overdue for the institution to transform its appearance, noting that plans to replace the old gate had been in consideration for quite some time. She thanked the Staff of Architectural Dept of FUTA for making their expertise available for the project.

Speaking earlier, Director, Physical Planning ,Engr. Oladeji Boyinbode , whose Directorate is in charge of direct supervision of the project from conception to execution and final delivery, said the FUTA south Gate had been in place for a very long time and was overdue for renovation and upgrade. He thanked the management for prioritising the reconstruction and the remodelling of the gate. He urged to the contractor to meet up with the stipulated timeline and ensure the delivery of high-quality work.
Responding Director, SAM KAY, Engineering, Builder, Temitope Lawanson thanked the management of FUTA for the opportunity given and promised not to disappoint with the deadline given. He explained that all the structural aspect will be taken care of, the drainage system within the project area will be properly covered to ensure safety and improve and improve the overall outlook of the entrance will be covered. He further stated that vehicular and pedestrian access will be clearly separated with designated lanes and walkways to enhance safety, promote orderliness and ensure smooth traffic flow at the south gate.
