The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to commence the second phase of the reconstruction and renovation of its permanent orientation camp in Kubwa, Abuja, citing increasing pressure on existing facilities.
FCT NYSC Coordinator, Samson Ateli, made the appeal during the opening and swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course, saying several sections of the camp require urgent repairs and expansion to accommodate the growing number of corps members posted to the territory.
According to him, 5,629 corps members—comprising 2,271 males and 3,358 females—had been registered for the orientation exercise as of August 6.
He disclosed that inadequate accommodation at the FCT camp has forced the NYSC to deploy some corps members to orientation camps in Benue, Kaduna, Kano and Nasarawa states.
Ateli urged the FCTA to accelerate the renovation project, noting that improved infrastructure would enhance the welfare of corps members and provide a more conducive environment for the three-week orientation programme.
He also encouraged corps members to take advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to acquire entrepreneurial skills and become self-reliant after service.
The coordinator further advised corps members to uphold discipline throughout their service year and avoid drug abuse, financial crimes and other activities capable of tarnishing the image of the NYSC scheme.
