The Plateau State Government has directed the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state from Monday, September 7, 2026, as a preventive measure against suspected diphtheria cases reported in some parts of the state.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, mni, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Plateau State Government, on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
According to the statement, the suspected cases have been reported in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
The government said schools that have already resumed academic activities are also directed to close from Monday and remain closed until further notice.
“Furthermore, school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians are to comply fully with the directive and ensure that students and pupils remain safely at home throughout the period as part of measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff during the period under review,” the statement said.
The government urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the directive as it continues to take appropriate measures in the interest of residents of the state.
It added that further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.
