The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Suleiman Danlami Kum as the new Head of its Nigeria National Office, following the appointment of Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as the council’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
Kum, 56, succeeds Dangut, whose tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office ended on October 1, 2026. Dangut has since assumed his new position as WAEC Registrar and CEO.
The appointment was confirmed by WAEC Nigeria in a statement issued by its Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, on Sunday.
Kum is a long-serving WAEC official who joined the council on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II. He has since held several administrative, examination and operational positions within the organisation.
Before his latest appointment, Kum served as Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Head of the Nigeria National Office. He also served as Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration until the end of August 2026.
Over the course of his career, he has also worked as Director of Administration, Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja, Head of the Security Printing Department, and Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano.
WAEC described Kum as an experienced test developer, administrator and executive with extensive knowledge of the council’s examination operations.
The council also highlighted his involvement in the development of variable data printing and enhanced code-security features for WAEC security printing, as well as the introduction of facial-recognition biometric devices to replace council-wide attendance systems.
His appointment comes as WAEC continues to strengthen examination administration and technology across its member countries.
Meanwhile, Dangut officially assumed office as WAEC Registrar and CEO in October 2026. He succeeded Pateh Bah of The Gambia and is expected to serve a five-year term ending in September 2031.
The leadership changes mark a significant transition for WAEC Nigeria, with Kum now responsible for overseeing the council’s activities in Nigeria, including examination administration and other operations affecting millions of candidates.
