The word japa, derived from Yoruba, means to run away or flee. In Nigeria, it has become a popular term for the growing trend of people leaving the country in search of better opportunities, security and a higher quality of life.

Bad Systems Will Always Defeat Good Teachers: Fix Your System and Your Team Will Thrive

From students and young graduates to skilled professionals and families, many Nigerians are exploring opportunities abroad. Although migration is not new, the increasing desire to relocate reflects concerns about economic hardship, insecurity, poor infrastructure and limited opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Here are five major reasons why Nigerians are choosing to japa.

1. Economic Hardship and Unemployment

Economic hardship is one of the major reasons Nigerians consider relocating abroad. Rising living costs, inflation, unemployment and underemployment have made it increasingly difficult for many households to meet their basic needs.

Even Nigerians with jobs may struggle to afford housing, food, transport, healthcare and other essential expenses. For young graduates, securing suitable employment can be particularly challenging, while available jobs may offer limited salaries and career progression.

Consequently, countries with higher wages and stronger labour markets appeal to those seeking financial stability. Many prospective migrants hope to save money, support their families, invest in businesses and achieve a better standard of living.

2. Insecurity and the Search for Safety

Insecurity is another factor influencing the decision to leave Nigeria. Kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and communal violence have affected communities across different parts of the country, creating fear and uncertainty.

For families, personal safety is an important consideration when planning their future. Some parents want their children to grow up in safer communities, while young people seek environments where they can work, study and travel with fewer concerns about their security.

The desire for peace of mind can therefore be as important as the pursuit of higher earnings. For some Nigerians, relocating abroad offers the hope of living in a more secure environment.

3. Poor Infrastructure and Public Services

Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges also contribute to the growing interest in emigration. Unreliable electricity, poor roads, inadequate public transport and inconsistent access to essential services can make everyday life more difficult.

Business owners often spend additional money on generators, fuel and alternative power sources to keep their operations running. These expenses increase operating costs and reduce the resources available for expansion.

Similarly, unreliable public services can affect productivity, education and healthcare. Some Nigerians are attracted to countries where electricity, transport systems and public services are more dependable.

For them, relocating offers the possibility of spending less time and money dealing with infrastructure problems and more on building their careers, businesses and families.

4. Better Education and Career Opportunities

Education and professional advancement are significant reasons Nigerians move abroad. Some students seek access to better-equipped universities, research facilities, specialised programmes and international qualifications.

Disruptions to academic calendars, inadequate research funding and limited access to certain learning resources may also influence students’ decisions to study overseas.

For professionals, countries with better-equipped workplaces, competitive salaries and clearer career pathways can be attractive. Nigerian doctors, nurses, engineers, researchers and technology specialists may seek opportunities to develop their skills and advance professionally.

However, the departure of skilled workers raises concerns about brain drain. When professionals leave essential sectors faster than they can be replaced, Nigeria risks losing valuable expertise needed to strengthen its institutions and public services.

5. The Desire for Functional Systems and a Better Quality of Life

Beyond money, security and employment, many Nigerians want dependable institutions and a better quality of life. They seek accessible healthcare, reliable public services, fairer opportunities and environments where hard work can lead to progress.

The desire to plan for the future with confidence is a major part of this aspiration. People want to invest in their education, raise families and build careers without constantly worrying about avoidable disruptions.

However, life abroad is not automatically easier. Migrants may face expensive housing, demanding immigration requirements, loneliness, discrimination and difficulties finding jobs that match their qualifications. The experience depends on their destination, financial resources, skills and immigration status.

Conclusion

Nigeria’s japa trend reflects the challenges many citizens face in their pursuit of security, financial stability and personal advancement. Economic hardship, insecurity, poor infrastructure, limited educational and career opportunities, and concerns about public services all influence the decision to leave.

Migration can create valuable opportunities, and Nigerians abroad can contribute to their home country through remittances, investments and knowledge transfer. However, the long-term challenge is to make staying in Nigeria a viable and attractive choice.

Creating jobs, improving security, strengthening infrastructure and investing in education and healthcare would help address some of the pressures driving emigration. Ultimately, Nigerians should be able to choose where to live and work based on opportunity, rather than feeling compelled to leave in search of a better life.
