In a historic move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Ronke Soyombo as the first female Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Edutimes Africa Reports.
Soyombo, who until now served as the Senior Special Adviser on Education, Science and Technology to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, received her appointment letter on Thursday in Abuja from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Enitan, was also present at the ceremony.
The appointment takes immediate effect, with Soyombo expected to assume office on Monday in Abuja.
Soyombo brings over three decades of cross-continental experience in education to the federal role. She previously served in various capacities in Ogun State, including as acting Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, and as the acting chairperson of both the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). She was also a three-time Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance in Lagos State.
An accomplished educationist and business lawyer, Soyombo holds a degree in Chemistry Education from the University of Lagos and an LLB in Business Law from London Guildhall University (now London Metropolitan University). She also earned a Microsoft certification in Server and Workstations in 1997.
Her appointment is expected to usher in a new era of leadership at the TRCN — the federal agency responsible for regulating and professionalising the teaching workforce across Nigeria.
Education stakeholders have hailed the appointment as a bold step toward gender inclusion and professionalism in the education sector.
