The University of Ibadan (UI) has emerged as the highest-ranked Nigerian university in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) placing second nationally.
The July edition assessed 32,148 universities and higher education institutions worldwide, according to data published by Webometrics.
UI ranked 1,291st globally to emerge as Nigeria’s top institution, while UNILAG occupied the 1,355th position worldwide.
The University of Nigeria ranked third in Nigeria and 1,397th globally, followed by Covenant University, Ota, which placed fourth nationally and 1,522nd worldwide.
Other Nigerian institutions that featured prominently include Landmark University, ranked 1,659th globally; the University of Ilorin, 1,883rd; Obafemi Awolowo University, 1,986th; Ahmadu Bello University, 2,068th; and the University of Port Harcourt, 2,077th.
The Federal University of Technology, Akure, ranked 2,203rd globally, while Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Bayero University Kano occupied the 2,308th and 2,543rd positions, respectively.

Webometrics publishes its ranking twice a year and evaluates higher education institutions using indicators related to visibility, openness and excellence. The ranking seeks to reflect institutions’ digital presence, accessibility of scholarly resources and research impact.
Harvard Leads Global Ranking
Globally, Harvard University retained the number one position, followed by Stanford University.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Oxford and University of Washington completed the top five positions.

American institutions dominated the global top 10, occupying eight of the 10 positions, while the United Kingdom had one institution in the top 10.
The July 2026 ranking shows that although Nigerian universities continue to feature among thousands of institutions assessed globally, the country’s highest-ranked institution, the University of Ibadan, remains outside the global top 1,000 in the Webometrics ranking.
