The Federal Government has announced that the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM-HS) has been listed on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal for the 2026/2027 academic session, paving the way for the admission of its pioneer cohort of 100 cadets.
The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, welcomed the development, describing it as a significant milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for education, healthcare and national security.
In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, Alausa said the college was established to strengthen military healthcare, develop specialised medical personnel and address critical manpower needs in the health sector.
Located within the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, AFCOM-HS is designed to integrate medical education with military officer training. The institution will train doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to serve in the Armed Forces and support national health security.
The college has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for Medicine and Surgery, leading to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, and Nursing Science, leading to the Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.) degree.
According to the minister, the institution will equip cadets with clinical competence, professional ethics and leadership skills, preparing them to deliver specialised healthcare services while meeting the medical needs of military personnel.
Alausa described the establishment of AFCOM-HS as part of the transformation of Nigeria’s education sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda, supported by the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
The minister commended the Minister of Defence, Lt Gen Chris Musa, and the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, alongside the Armed Forces leadership, the technical working group chaired by Brig Gen Dr Idris Babatunde Solebo, the NUC, JAMB and relevant professional regulatory bodies for their contributions to the college’s establishment.
He also reaffirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to academic oversight, quality assurance and regulatory collaboration to ensure that the institution meets the required standards.
Prospective applicants have been advised to consult official AFCOM-HS and JAMB channels for details on eligibility, application procedures, military selection requirements and admission dates.
