Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has welcomed the listing of the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM-HS) on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal for the 2026/2027 academic session, describing it as a milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Alausa said the development would strengthen specialised medical training, improve military healthcare delivery and support national security through the training of doctors, nurses and other health professionals.
Located within the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, AFCOM-HS was established to train military cadets in Medicine and Surgery, Nursing and related medical disciplines.
The college has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and Nursing Science (B.NSc.) and is preparing to admit its pioneer cohort of 100 cadets.
According to Alausa, the institution will integrate medical education with military officer development, equipping cadets with clinical competence, professional ethics and leadership skills to meet the healthcare needs of the Armed Forces.
He described the development as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to transform the education sector through the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
The minister commended the Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Chris Musa; the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle; the Armed Forces leadership; and the Technical Working Group chaired by Brigadier General Dr Idris Babatunde Solebo for their contributions to establishing the college.
He also acknowledged the roles of the NUC, JAMB and relevant professional regulatory authorities in advancing the institution’s development.
Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to academic oversight, quality assurance and regulatory collaboration to ensure the college meets the required standards.
Prospective applicants have been advised to consult official AFCOM-HS and JAMB channels for information on eligibility, application procedures, military selection requirements and admission dates.
