Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has said that Nigeria’s future is closely tied to the quality of education available to its children and young people.
In a statement marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on Thursday, Alausa described education as a critical driver of human capital development, social mobility, innovation and sustainable national growth.
The Minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, noting that the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey, celebrate its shared identity and renew commitment to building a peaceful, united and prosperous nation.
Alausa also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support for the education sector and human capital development.
According to him, reforms being implemented under the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) are focused on expanding access to education, strengthening institutions, supporting learners, improving teacher quality, promoting technical and vocational education, and equipping young people with relevant skills.
He noted that despite ongoing reforms, more work remains to be done across the education sector.
“We must continue to strengthen foundational learning, improve teacher development, expand skills and technical education, promote research and innovation, and provide safe and conducive learning environments where every Nigerian child has the opportunity to learn, develop and fulfil their potential,” he said.
The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to working with governments, teachers, parents, students, education stakeholders and development partners to build an education system that is accessible, equitable and responsive to the needs of a changing world.
Addressing young Nigerians, Alausa urged them to remain hopeful, disciplined and committed to excellence, stressing that their knowledge, creativity, character and skills are essential to the country’s development.
“You are not only the leaders of tomorrow; you are important participants in shaping the Nigeria of today,” he said.
He also called on Nigerians to continue promoting unity, patriotism, service and shared responsibility, describing education as one of the strongest foundations for achieving the nation’s aspirations.
The Minister wished Nigerians a happy Independence Day and commended the resilience and courage that continue to define the country.
