The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a health advisory urging students, staff and other members of its community to observe precautionary measures following a reported case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The advisory, issued by the university’s Communication Unit, said the Federal Government announced the case on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The university urged members of its community to remain vigilant, practise good hygiene and follow official public health guidance.
Ebola is a serious viral disease that spreads through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person who is sick or has died from the disease. Transmission can also occur through contact with contaminated materials.
UNILAG advised students and staff to wash their hands frequently with soap and running water or use an appropriate alcohol-based hand sanitiser. It also warned against direct contact with the blood and other body fluids of anyone suspected of having the disease.
The university identified possible symptoms of Ebola as fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. It urged anyone who develops symptoms, particularly after a possible exposure, to seek prompt medical guidance.
Members of the university community who suspect they may have been exposed to the virus were advised to contact public health authorities immediately, even if they feel well. Anyone who develops symptoms should avoid close contact with others and call public health authorities for guidance before visiting a healthcare facility.
The advisory also called on potentially exposed individuals contacted by public health teams, including airline passengers who may have been exposed, to cooperate with contact-tracing efforts and provide the necessary information.
UNILAG cautioned against spreading unverified information or stigmatising people based on suspected exposure. It urged students, staff and other members of the university community to rely on credible sources and comply with instructions from public health authorities.
The university provided the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) toll-free line, 6232, for further information and reporting suspected cases.
The advisory stressed that early detection, prompt reporting and collective responsibility are essential to preventing further transmission.
