Ghana govt urged to consult special educationists for successful free tertiary education for pwd
The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has urged the government to work closely with special educationists to ensure the effective implementation of the newly announced Free Tertiary Education policy for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
According to the GFD Secretary, Mr Aminu Ibrahim, collaborating with specialists in disability education is essential for creating a supportive learning environment tailored to the unique needs of students with disabilities. Speaking to reporters, Mr Ibrahim highlighted the necessity of accessible infrastructure, adaptive technology, and trained educators in successfully accommodating PWDs at the tertiary level.
He expressed optimism about the policy, calling it a “groundbreaking step” toward inclusive education, while stressing that a robust support system would prevent challenges PWDs might face if their needs were not adequately addressed.
“We are hopeful this policy will enable persons with disabilities to pursue higher education without the financial burden,” said Ibrahim. “However, we need special education professionals to be consulted from the outset, ensuring our tertiary institutions are truly accessible and inclusive.”
Education advocates have echoed these sentiments, emphasising that integrating inclusive teaching methods and resources will help Ghana meet its broader goals of equal opportunity and inclusive growth.
