Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has attributed the extension of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Adebooye’s tenure to the institution’s steady growth and achievements under his leadership.
Adeleke, represented by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, made the disclosure on Thursday during the university’s 16th convocation ceremony held at its main campus in Osogbo.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the university had recorded significant progress in academic development, infrastructure expansion and industrial harmony under the current administration.
The governor said 40 major building projects had been constructed and commissioned within the last four years, alongside more than 30 complementary projects, including renovations, procurement, supplies and solar installations aimed at improving teaching, learning and administrative activities.
He noted that the university had maintained uninterrupted academic activities for five years, without missing any academic session or delaying the graduation of eligible students.
Adeleke also said UNIOSUN was the second state-owned university in Nigeria to fully implement the 2025 Federal Government–Staff Union agreement, describing the institution as a model in staff welfare and learning conditions.
“In a bid to sustain continuity of performance and academic excellence, I approved a two-year extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor with effect from January 4, 2027, after strategic consultations and compliance with the state law,” he said.
The governor explained that the decision had been backed by an amendment to the Osun State University Law (2006), recently passed by the Osun State House of Assembly.
He maintained that the extension was lawful and in the best interest of the university, adding that his administration would continue to support initiatives that promote academic and administrative excellence.
Adeleke further highlighted recent achievements under Adebooye’s leadership, including the attraction of five major Federal Government projects to the university and the successful revitalisation of its medical school.
According to him, the university fulfilled all accreditation requirements of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and successfully presented its 90 pioneer MBBS students for induction and degree awards.
The governor urged staff, management and the governing council to continue working together to advance the institution, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting improved governance and service delivery at the university.
