Call for Applications: Africa-China Relations Training Workshop for Journalists in West Africa (Fully Funded)
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), in partnership with the Wits Centre for Journalism (WCJ), is inviting applications from journalists across Anglophone West Africa for a fully funded, three-day capacity-building workshop on reporting critically on the evolving dynamics of Africa-China relations.
The training, themed “Building Capacity to Cover a Complex Story – Africa and China Relations,” is scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, in the last quarter of 2026 (September–October).
About the Training
Africa continues to be a focal point of geopolitical competition among global powers, with China’s expanding influence across the continent shaping conversations around trade, infrastructure, development financing, governance, natural resources, technology, and international relations.
As global power structures shift toward a multipolar world, it is increasingly important for African journalists to report on these developments with depth, accuracy, and context. This workshop aims to equip journalists with the knowledge and tools required to critically examine Africa-China engagements and produce impactful, public-interest stories grounded in African realities.
Participants will gain both subject-matter expertise and advanced journalism skills necessary to report effectively on complex international relations topics. The training will combine theoretical insights with practical reporting techniques.
Eligibility Criteria
Interested applicants must:
• Be based in an Anglophone West African country (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, or The Gambia)
• Work in print, radio, television, or digital media
• Report on areas such as politics, economy, business, trade, development, environment, extractives, infrastructure, or international affairs
• Be available during the training period (September–October 2026)
• Be able to secure a formal permission letter from their editor
• Demonstrate the ability to produce in-depth stories after the trainingNigerian job vacancies
Participation Benefits
Selected participants will receive full sponsorship to attend the workshop. This includes:
• Return flight ticket (economy class)
• Accommodation and meals
• Local transportation
• Access to story grants
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to apply for reporting grants to produce in-depth stories on Africa-China relations. Outstanding participants may also be selected to attend the Africa Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) in Kenya (November 10–12, 2026), fully funded, where they will present their work.
