The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has resigned from office.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press conference at the NFF headquarters in Abuja, bringing his tenure as the head of Nigerian football administration to an end.
The NFF subsequently confirmed that Gusau had resigned alongside members of the federation’s Executive Committee and its General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.
Explaining his decision, Gusau said it followed consultations with his family, friends and football stakeholders.
He said he had informed members of his board about his decision and advised those willing to follow suit to resign.
The resignation comes amid mounting pressure on the NFF leadership following a difficult period for Nigerian football.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons recently suffered the historic setback of missing out on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.
The NFF has also faced scrutiny over the management of government intervention funds and wider concerns about the administration of Nigerian football.
Gusau was elected NFF president in September 2022, succeeding Amaju Pinnick. His resignation comes barely a month before the federation’s scheduled elective congress on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The mass resignation has now created fresh uncertainty over the leadership and administration of Nigerian football, with attention expected to shift to the next steps for the federation.
