Teaching Profession Gets Fresh Push in Northwest

The teaching profession is receiving renewed attention in the Northwest as the Northwest Development Commission (NWDC) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) move to strengthen teacher training and improve the appeal of teaching as a career.

The two institutions reached an agreement on a strategic partnership following a high-level meeting between the NWDC Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Professor Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, and the NCCE Executive Secretary, Dr Angela Ajala.

The partnership is expected to support teacher training, infrastructure development and advocacy, while repositioning Colleges of Education as important institutions for regional development.

For Ma’aji, investing in teachers is essential to the Northwest’s long-term progress.

“The Northwest cannot achieve sustainable development without investing in teachers. Colleges of Education are the foundation,” he said.

He added that the NWDC would work with the NCCE to improve training, infrastructure and the public perception of teaching across the region’s seven states.

Ajala, however, pointed to a deeper challenge: the declining respect attached to the teaching profession.

She argued that although virtually every professional passes through the hands of a teacher, teaching has increasingly been pushed to the bottom of the social ladder.

Your Certificate Is Not Enough! Your Certificate Is Not Enough! Your Certificate Is Not Enough!

“You cannot go through life without passing through a teacher, and yet it is the teacher that is at the bottom of the ladder,” she said.

According to Ajala, changing this perception is necessary if teaching is to become a first-choice profession for young Nigerians.

Her position is also consistent with the NCCE’s wider focus on strengthening Colleges of Education and elevating the teaching profession. The Commission has said its reform agenda is aimed at producing competent, motivated and future-ready educators.

The NWDC-NCCE partnership will therefore focus on areas including curriculum support, teacher training and advocacy, with both institutions seeking to improve the quality and attractiveness of teacher education in the Northwest.

The significance of the move goes beyond the classroom. The NWDC has identified education, skills development, youth and women development as key areas for driving inclusive growth across the region.

For the two institutions, strengthening Colleges of Education is consequently part of a larger effort to develop the human capital required for the Northwest’s future.

If the partnership succeeds in improving teacher preparation while restoring the profession’s appeal, it could help address two interconnected challenges: producing better-equipped teachers and encouraging more young people to see teaching as a career worth choosing.

The push ultimately reflects a simple idea: a region seeking sustainable development must first invest in the people who will educate its next generation.
