The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is set to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its academic curriculum as part of efforts to prepare students for the changing demands of the global labour market.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, disclosed this while outlining the institution’s plans to strengthen innovation and experiential learning.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the integration of AI will enable students to acquire skills relevant to emerging industries while encouraging them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.
The move reflects the growing adoption of artificial intelligence in higher education, with universities increasingly exploring ways to equip students with digital and technological skills required in the workplace.
Beyond AI, ESUT is also promoting experiential learning, which places greater emphasis on practical exposure and hands-on learning rather than relying solely on traditional classroom instruction.
The university said the approach would help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and workplace requirements, while encouraging students to develop problem-solving, creativity and innovation skills.
The development comes as Nigerian universities face increasing pressure to redesign their programmes around emerging technologies and the skills demanded by employers.
For students, the proposed integration of AI could provide greater exposure to tools and applications that are rapidly transforming sectors including engineering, medicine, finance, education, agriculture and communications.
