The Federal Government has rolled out a new curriculum framework for basic, senior secondary and technical education, following a comprehensive review aimed at cutting overload and improving quality learning outcomes.
Announcing the development in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, who represented the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, said the review was carried out in partnership with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and other key stakeholders.
According to her, the revised framework is designed to strike a balance between subject offerings and practical learning. Under the new structure, pupils in Primary 1–3 will now take between nine and ten subjects, while those in Primary 4–6 will handle 10–12. Junior Secondary School students will offer 12–14 subjects, Senior Secondary students 8–9, while their peers in technical colleges will take 9–11.
Prof. Ahmad noted that the move was intended to ease the burden on learners, create more room for in-depth study, and ensure that education in Nigeria keeps pace with modern realities.
She commended stakeholders for their contribution to the review process, stressing that the Federal Ministry of Education will strictly monitor implementation to guarantee smooth transition and effective adoption in schools across the country.
