Congratulations on your admission!
As you prepare to begin your university journey, there are important items you should consider getting before resumption.
Having these materials ready can help you save money, settle in more easily and begin your academic activities without unnecessary delays.
Here are nine things to consider:
1. Writing Materials
Get notebooks, pens, pencils and other basic writing materials. You will need them for taking lecture notes, completing assignments and preparing for examinations.
2. Power Bank
If your school has an unreliable power supply, a power bank can help keep your phone charged. This is useful for communication, accessing online learning materials and receiving important school updates.
3. Backpack
A good backpack will help you carry your notebooks, writing materials, laptop and other essentials between your hostel, lecture halls and library.
4. Basic First-Aid Supplies
Consider keeping basic first-aid items, such as plasters and antiseptic wipes, as well as any personal medication you need. Know when to seek help from your school’s health centre rather than relying on self-medication.
5. Extension Box
An extension box can help you connect your electronic devices when suitable sockets are limited. However, check your hostel’s rules and avoid overloading sockets.
6. Laptop
A laptop can make university life easier by helping you research topics, type assignments, prepare presentations and apply for scholarships, internships and other opportunities. If you cannot afford one immediately, explore access to your school’s computer facilities.
7. Study Table and Chair
If your accommodation allows it and your budget permits, a study table and chair can provide a comfortable space for reading, completing assignments and preparing for examinations.
8. Personal Hygiene Essentials
Pack items such as soap, toothpaste, a toothbrush, deodorant, sanitary products where needed, and laundry supplies. Having these essentials readily available can help you settle into your new environment.
9. Bedsheets and Personal Bedding
If you will be staying in a hostel, find out what bedding is provided before resumption. You may need bedsheets, a pillow, a pillowcase and a blanket to make your sleeping space comfortable.
You do not have to buy everything at once. Prioritise the essentials, consider your school’s requirements and work within your budget. You can gradually purchase other items as your needs become clearer.
