Nigeria’s Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has abolished the 18-year age limit for admissions into tertiary institutions, marking a shift from the previous policy.
Dr. Alausa announced the decision during his inaugural press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, signaling a potential review of the country’s education policy.
While addressing reporters, the minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s decision to nullify over 22,700 degree certificates obtained by Nigerians from unaccredited universities in Togo and Benin Republic.
He emphasized that the move to void these certificates stands, targeting institutions deemed “fake” by Nigerian authorities.
Alausa also highlighted plans to address Nigeria’s rising unemployment by aligning education with practical skills. He disclosed the government’s intentions to collaborate with the private sector to provide training that would equip students with job-ready skills.
Additionally, he pledged support for universities of agriculture to adopt commercial farming practices, aimed at tackling the nation’s food insecurity.
