The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has emerged winner of the 2026 Society for Experimental Biology of Nigeria (NISEB) University Quiz and Pitch Competition, successfully defending the title it won in 2025.
FUTA’s representatives, Akinrogba Afeez Idowu and Anoro Emmanuel Oghenemaro, both undergraduate students of the Department of Biochemistry, claimed first place after scoring the highest overall points during the competition held at the 2026 NISEB Conference hosted by the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The duo defeated teams from 13 other universities, progressing through the preliminary, semi-final and final rounds before finishing with an overall score of 76.4 per cent. They recorded a perfect score in the quiz segment and impressed judges with their presentation on “Biotechnology as Nigeria’s New Oil: Myth or Possibility.”
Covenant University finished second with 62.3 per cent, while the University of Ilorin and the University of Benin placed third and fourth respectively.
Following the victory, the students paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, who congratulated the team for sustaining the university’s tradition of academic excellence and bringing honour to the institution.
The university also acknowledged the contributions of the Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Quiz Team Coordinator, Professor A.C. Akinmoladun, alongside former participants who mentored the winning team.
