As Sokoto State prepares for the 2026/2027 academic session, principals across the state have been given a fresh task: strengthen monitoring, maintain discipline and lead by example in their schools.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala, gave the charge during a meeting with principals from across the state ahead of the new academic session.
Professor Ala urged principals to remain resilient, committed and dedicated to their responsibilities, stressing the need for stronger monitoring and evaluation in their respective schools.
He said principals must demonstrate the level of dedication expected from teachers and other staff under their supervision.
The Commissioner commended the principals for their contributions to the development of education in the state, assuring them of the continued commitment of the Sokoto State Government to improving the sector.
According to him, their efforts have contributed significantly to the achievements recorded by the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu, particularly in education.
Professor Ala expressed optimism that Sokoto State would soon rank among the top five states in Nigeria in terms of educational performance, adding that the government would continue to provide the necessary support and resources to achieve the goal.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Sanusi Aliyu Binji, also urged principals to sustain their efforts and remain committed to improving standards in their respective schools.
He commended their contributions to the state’s education sector, noting that Sokoto recorded an 85 per cent success rate in WAEC, NECO and NABTEB examinations.
Other education stakeholders at the meeting also emphasised the importance of punctuality and discipline. They urged principals to always be present and punctual at their duty posts, saying their conduct would set an example for teachers and other staff.
Speaking on behalf of the principals, the State President of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Comrade Muhammad Ikililu Abubakar, pledged their continued support for government policies and initiatives aimed at improving schools across the state.
A major highlight of the meeting was the flag-off of the distribution of educational books procured by the Sokoto State Government under the leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu.
The books are to be distributed to schools across the state to support teaching and learning as the new academic session begins.
In a vote of thanks, the Sokoto State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Murtala Muhammad, appreciated the Commissioner and the ministry’s management team for their efforts toward improving education in the state.
