As teachers across Nigeria prepare to celebrate the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, a number of state governments have announced special arrangements to mark the occasion.
So far, at least four states have declared Monday, October 5, a work-free or teaching-free day for teachers in recognition of the annual celebration.
Here are the states that have made the announcement:
Oyo State
The Oyo State Government declared Monday, October 5, a work-free day for all teachers across the state.
According to a statement issued by the government, the decision is intended to allow teachers participate fully in activities organised to celebrate their contributions, reflect on progress within the education sector and strengthen unity within the teaching community.
The government also congratulated teachers on the occasion and reaffirmed its commitment to policies and programmes aimed at improving teaching and learning across the state.
Kwara State
The Kwara State Government has also declared Monday, October 5, a work-free day for teachers in the state in commemoration of World Teachers’ Day.
Ekiti State
Teachers in Ekiti State will also enjoy a work-free day on Monday as part of activities marking this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration.
Akwa Ibom State
Akwa Ibom State is among the states that have announced a teaching-free day for teachers to commemorate World Teachers’ Day.
Why World Teachers’ Day Matters
Celebrated annually on October 5, World Teachers’ Day recognises the role teachers play in shaping learners, supporting communities and contributing to national development.
The day also provides an opportunity for governments, education stakeholders and the public to celebrate teachers and reflect on issues affecting the teaching profession.
With several states setting aside Monday for the celebration, many teachers across the country will have the opportunity to participate in activities organised in their honour as the global education community marks World Teachers’ Day 2026.
