Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emerged as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
The leadership transition was announced during the ECOWAS Authority meeting, where President Faye formally assumed the bloc’s rotating chairmanship.
As the new chairman, Faye is expected to steer the regional organisation’s efforts toward strengthening economic integration, promoting peace and security, and addressing political and governance challenges across West Africa.
In a related development, Biram Diop was appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission, taking over from Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
The appointments come at a critical time for the regional bloc as it continues to confront security threats, economic challenges, and efforts to deepen regional cooperation among member states.
