The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed the finalization of allowance payments for the 2025 academic year, following consultations with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector.
University Allowance Breakdown
NSFAS has outlined the approved allowance caps for university students in both catered and non-catered residences within metropolitan areas. These allocations also cover students with disabilities, including provisions for transport and distance learning.
Catered Residences (Metro Areas): R65,993 for accommodation and R5,678 for books.
Non-Catered Residences (Metro Areas): R56,633 for accommodation and R5,678 for books.
Additional Allowances: Students in both categories will receive R3,167 for personal care and a R17,160 living allowance.
Support for Students with Disabilities: R52,000 for human assistance and R54,080 for assistive devices.
NSFAS has advised institutions that any adjustments to the allowance caps require prior written approval before submission.
To facilitate smooth disbursement, NSFAS released a second upfront payment to universities during the week of March 3, 2025, ensuring that March allowances reached students by March 7.
TVET College Allowance Payments
Students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges have also received their allowances, with payments structured as follows:
Catered Students with Disabilities (Metro Areas): R69,633 for accommodation.
Non-Catered Students (Non-Metro Areas): R42,640 for accommodation.
Catered Residences (Metro Areas): R65,993 for accommodation.
Non-Catered Residences (Metro Areas): R56,633 for accommodation.
The first round of payments, processed on March 7, covered two months’ worth of allowances based on valid student registrations. NSFAS reported that as of March 4, 18 TVET colleges had successfully uploaded their registration data, enabling them to receive payments.
To ensure timely disbursement, NSFAS scheduled a second payment run for March 14, with a registration upload deadline of March 10. This will allow all students with valid registrations to receive their allowances before the end of March.
Appeal Submissions for 2025 Funding
NSFAS has urged students who have lodged funding appeals to submit the necessary documents within 30 days of receiving their application results. Timely submission will enable the scheme to finalize funding decisions promptly.
With the 2025 allowance caps now confirmed, NSFAS has called on institutions to submit valid registration data through its portal to prevent delays in payments.

My son, 3rd year completed his appeal for further nsfas funding 2025. However the option available as reason is not really applicable and other as option not available. At the time of his exam 2024 he had a metal breakdown/metal health situation and before then seeing the wellness couch department as referred to by his HOD /Dr of humanity. He did not a need medical doctor for but nsfas request a full medical report and don’t declare the report from uct wellness department of and his HOD of humanity. He also submitted a medical report whereas his doctor indicate her diagnose and reason for having schedule appointments since and before 2024 August (during his final exam) as well us continue appointment right up til end 2025.. My point is that nsfas has still not funded him and also requesting a full medal report of his condition is against doctor and patient privacy policy. Currently Uct has not request him to do an appeal and registered successfully for continuing studies for 2025. He has been successful placed at a self catering residence and moved and settled and have been successful attend his classes and continue his sessions with wellness department. The holdup is NSFAS that still not provided him with any funding to see to his wellbeing and studies(Books). I am unemployed and the stress of him not able to look after himself I can only imagine is more stressful for him and with help his getting from his wellness couch is helping him to manage and stay positive and focused.
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are deeply sorry to read about all you and your son are going through but unfortunately, we are just a media organisation that puts out current happenings in the education sector, we don’t actually have any connection with NSFAS. We really do wish that we could do something to help.
