The University of California, Berkeley, through its Center for African Studies and with the generous support of the Mastercard Foundation, is pleased to announce the 2026 Visiting Fellowships for African Scholars. This prestigious and fully funded academic opportunity offers two African scholars the chance to engage in independent research at one of the world’s leading universities.
✨ About the Fellowship
The UC Berkeley Visiting Fellowship provides scholars the opportunity to:
Pursue independent academic research.
Complete a major scholarly work (book or journal article).
Foster academic collaboration with UC Berkeley faculty.
Mentor Mastercard Foundation Scholars on campus.
The fellowship duration is one academic semester (4 months), beginning no later than January 20, 2026. This is a non-renewable position.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Reside in an African country.
Hold a PhD at the time of application.
Be affiliated with an African university, think tank, research institute, or NGO.
Demonstrate strong research capacity and academic potential.
Although research fields are open, preference will be given to proposals that address themes such as:
Youth
Labor and livelihoods
Mobility and displacement
Technology and innovation
Democracy and governance
Futures studies

A research proposal (maximum 2 pages, excluding references).
