The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has launched an investigation into reports of possible water contamination in some of its student hostels following complaints of vomiting, stooling, and other related health concerns among residents.
The university management confirmed that a comprehensive assessment of its water supply system is currently underway, including laboratory testing, to determine whether the reported illnesses are linked to hostel water sources.
Although no official link has been established at this stage, preliminary inspections reportedly identified discoloured water from a borehole supplying one of the hostel blocks. The affected water source has since been suspended as a precautionary measure, while alternative water provisions have been made for students.
Authorities at University of Lagos stated that immediate safety measures have been implemented to protect students, with laboratory results from water samples expected within 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the Students’ Union has called for calm, urging students to await the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
