The Federal Government has attributed recent electricity supply disruptions in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo States to inadequate gas supply, reduced hydroelectric generation and maintenance challenges.
The Federal Ministry of Power disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, November 5, 2026, assuring residents and businesses in the affected areas that efforts were underway to restore normal electricity supply.
The ministry acknowledged the impact of the outages on households, businesses and public institutions, particularly in areas that had recently experienced improvements in electricity supply.
It explained that preliminary assessments indicated that the disruptions were not caused by any major or systemic failure of the national grid but resulted from operational and maintenance challenges across parts of the electricity supply chain.
According to the ministry, inadequate gas supply to thermal power stations and reduced electricity generation from hydroelectric stations due to lower water inflows into reservoirs had contributed to the decline in power generation.
The ministry added that relevant operators were working to address the challenges and restore electricity supply.
It disclosed that the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, was engaging the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to accelerate restoration efforts.
The minister had also directed engagements with relevant operators to resolve operational constraints, fast-track ongoing maintenance activities and provide regular updates to electricity consumers.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving electricity supply, the ministry said Nigerians deserved better power delivery and assured consumers that the administration was working towards achieving this.
The minister also thanked affected consumers for their patience and understanding, promising further updates as efforts to restore normal electricity supply continued.
The statement was signed by Adeola Adelabu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power.
