The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised 2027 examination timetable for major external examinations in Nigeria, targeting the release of WAEC, NECO and other examination results by August 2027 to facilitate tertiary institution admissions from September.
The proposed timetable, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education, covers examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS).
Under the proposed schedule, the 2027 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by JAMB is expected to hold from March 15 to 25, with results projected for release in March.
The NECO Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) is scheduled to take place from April 1 to May 14, while the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) organised by WAEC is proposed for May 11 to June 18.
Both NECO and WAEC results are expected to be released in August 2027, according to the proposed timetable.
The timetable also indicates that NABTEB examinations will hold from June 1 to July 5, while NBAIS examinations are scheduled for June 10 to July 9. Results for both examination bodies are also expected in August.
FG Moves to Prevent Examination Timetable Clashes
The proposed harmonisation is aimed at improving coordination among examination bodies, reducing timetable clashes and ensuring the timely processing and release of examination results.
To advance the initiative, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, convened a meeting with heads and representatives of examination bodies at the Federal Ministry of Education headquarters in Abuja.
Discussions focused on aligning examination schedules, minimising conflicts between examinations and ensuring that results are released in time to support the tertiary education admission process.
The initiative is part of the education reform agenda of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
NESRI seeks to improve efficiency, strengthen coordination and enhance educational outcomes across Nigeria’s education sector.
2027 Examination Timetable: Proposed Dates for JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB
The proposed dates for the major external examinations are outlined below:
– JAMB UTME: March 15–25, 2027. Results expected in March.
– NECO SSCE: April 1–May 14, 2027. Results expected in August.
– WAEC WASSCE: May 11–June 18, 2027. Results expected in August.
– NABTEB: June 1–July 5, 2027. Results expected in August.
– NBAIS: June 10–July 9, 2027. Results expected in August.
The Ministry said it would continue engaging examination bodies to ensure compliance with the proposed timelines, strengthen accountability and improve alignment between examination results and tertiary institution admissions.
If implemented, the plan could help candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education begin the admission process earlier, particularly those awaiting their senior secondary school examination results.
The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said it remained committed to implementing education reforms through NESRI to improve efficiency and expand timely access to tertiary education.
However, the dates remain proposed timelines, and candidates, parents and schools are advised to follow official announcements from the Federal Ministry of Education and the respective examination bodies for confirmation of the final 2027 examination schedules.
