This week, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, warmly received Her Excellency Mrs. Mariam Morale Palmero, Nigeria’s Ambassador from the Republic of Cuba, in Abuja.
The meeting marked a significant step in reinforcing the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Cuba, established under a legal framework dating back to 1981.
The discussion centered on renewing and enhancing collaborative efforts, particularly in the area of higher education. Both nations emphasized the importance of leveraging their partnership to foster educational advancements that benefit their respective populations.
One highlight of the meeting was Cuba’s “Yes I Can” literacy program, a globally recognized initiative aimed at eradicating illiteracy.
The program aligns closely with Nigeria’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative, opening doors for potential cooperation in tackling literacy challenges and promoting vocational skills development.
In addition, the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria accepted an invitation from Cuba’s Ministry of Education to participate in the upcoming International Congress on Higher Education, Universidad 2024.
The congress, set to explore the theme “Higher Education of the Future: Social Transformation, Quality, Pertinence, and Sustainability,” will bring together educational leaders and policymakers to discuss the evolving landscape of global education.
Dr. Alausa expressed gratitude to Ambassador Palmero for her visit, highlighting the importance of fostering strong diplomatic and educational ties. “We are committed to working closely with the Republic of Cuba to further solidify our relationship and to pursue initiatives that will uplift our higher education systems,” he stated.
