The Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with Bureau of Establishment and Training organised a-day capacity building seminar and induction for 200 newly appointed Head teachers in the State.
State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, declared the event opened with the theme: “Effective School Management as a Catalyst for Qualitative Basic Education” at NUT Hall, Kuto, Abeokuta, said that the appointment was necessary to fill the vacancies in the various schools.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Local Government Pension, Engr. Olufisan Osiyale, Onasanya, charged the inductees to strive for excellence and take the responsibilities of remolding the destiny of pupils and serving as inspiration towards shaping their future.
“Basic education is a cornerstone of any society development. Your actions and punctuality must be deliberate to guide them for a purpose. Strive to be proactive, be creative and discharge your duties,” he said,
He implored them to engage parents and guardians to restore livelihood, noting that the formative years of every child were critical for development, requiring quality instruction and encouragement.
In his address, Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu described the event as remarkable and prestigious, urging them to see the appointment as opportunity to serve and showcase their abilities.
The Board Secretary, SUBEB, Dr. Mikhail Lawal stated that their selection as the Head teachers was not only a recognition of their capabilities but also a call to higher responsibilities, urging the inductees to be the torchbearers of positive change.
“Your role transcends administrative duties; you are mentors, community leaders and drivers of the state’s education policy at the grassroots. This induction marks your formal entry into this noble cadre and I encourage you to embrace the training sessions with an open mind and a readiness to learn new management strategies,” he said.
In their separate goodwill messages, Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi, represented by Zonal Secretary Abeokuta South, Comrade Oladimeji Adenekan, State Chairman, Association of Primary School Head teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Comrade Folake Onabajo represented by AOPSHON State Chairman, Abeokuta South, Comrade Taiwo Itunnu, the State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Noah Sewakanu represented by the State Secretary, Comrade Samson Oyelere, and the Chairman, Conference of Education Secretary, Mr. Alli Muhammad, charged the participants not only to be administrators but visionaries, motivators and change agents.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, while delivering her Lecture with the theme: “Effective Collaboration with Education Stakeholders for Qualitative Delivery of Basic Education in Ogun State” encouraged head teachers to collaborate with stakeholders, delegate responsibilities, engage learners, build a strong foundation in early classes, and maintain transparency and clear goals.
Speaking on the topic, “Monitoring and Evaluation: A Tool for Successful Learning Achievements in Basic Education” the Facilitator, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, stressed the importance of monitoring and evaluation as essential tools to track progress and ensure effective learning outcomes in schools.
Lending her voice, another Facilitator, the Olori of Olowu Kingdom, Mrs. Aminat Matemilola discussed on the topic, “Effective School Manager: Pivotal to a Holistic Basic Education System” emphasised that effective school manager must be strategic thinkers, inclusive leaders, and responsive to community needs, adding that inductees should align their work with national education policies and foster a vibrant, and motivating school environment.
Speaking on behalf of inductees, Mr. Olaniyi Akinde from Army Children School, Ayetoro in Yewa North Local Government and Mrs. Olubusola Komolafe from Ansaru-deen School, Irolu in Ikenne Local Government appreciated the State Government led by Prince Dapo Abiodun for prioritising their welfare, promising to discharge their duties as expected.
